On Wednesday, we had our Year 6 fete. There was food, and lots of games and activities. Just before the fete started, Eirini, our friend, walked up to us and said "Remember the star disc I was telling you guys about?" And then we both nodded. Eirini dug deep in her bag and took out a circular disc of the star contellations. Shiri and Tanna took the disc, and everyone crowded to look at it. We looked at all the star constellations in the sky, and then told Eirini it was fantastic. "I got it from the Observatory hotel". She says. "I don't know exactly where".
What is a star disc?
A star disc is a circular object that you can turn around. On the edges of the circle there are times such as 4:00. What you do, is you drag the circle inside the circle to any time, to see what constellation comes up at what time. Here is a picture of how it looks like, just incase you are confused. We made the picture big so you can see where you drag the circle to. It is very useful when you are trying to view the stars. It is kind of like a map, but in a different type; e.g The disc has two sides. One side is the southern hemisphere constellations, so if you live in Australia, for example, you are below the equator. On the other side of the disc is the northern hemisphere constellations, so if you live in the United States, for example, you are above the equator. Different sides of earth see different constellations, but if you view constellations from a telescope you may see them; especially in the observatory.
Why is it so useful?
They are useful, because they help you see star constellations in the sky, and it shows you nearly all the constellation in the sky. Also, if you are bored, you can enjoy yourself with it. If you are in sleepovers, it's good to sneak outside with your star constellation disc and take a peak at the stars. But make sure there are no clouds!
Maybe you could buy a star disc! Enjoy!
