We thought we would tell you some information on galaxies.
Stars are grouped together in galaxies. There are billions and billions of galaxies in our universe, each containing millions of stars. Our solar system, is a tiny part of the galaxy; the Milky way.
Galaxy shapes
There are the four types of galaxy shapes.
Barred spiral galaxies have a bar across
the bright middle with an arm at each end
of the bar.
Spiral galaxies have a bright middle
with two or more curved arms of stars
spiralling out from it.
Elliptical galaxies can be round,
oval, like the one shown here, or
even sausage shaped! Irregular galaxies, such as this one, are often formed when one galaxy crashes into another.
Our galaxy
Because our planet is located in the milky way, we cannot see from the outside and it is very difficult to tell exactly what shape the milky way galaxy is. But most astronomers think that it is spiral shaped. Compared to many other galaxies, the milky way is pretty big. It is about 100,00 light years across and it contains more than 2 thousand trillion stars.
More information coming soon to this post!
